To connect Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with Forwardly, you'll need to register an application in Microsoft Entra ID, register that same application in Business Central, and then enter your credentials in Forwardly. Setup takes about 15 minutes and is a one-time process per company.
Reminder: Make sure you have administrative access to the Microsoft Entra admin center and administrative access to Dynamics 365 Business Central with the SUPER permission set before you start.
How to prepare to connect your business to Dynamics 365 on Forwardly
Before connecting Forwardly to Business Central, you'll need to register an application in Microsoft Entra ID.
- Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
- Go to Identity, then Applications, then App registrations.
- Select New registration.
- Enter a name, such as "Forwardly Integration."
- Under Supported account types, select Accounts in this organizational directory only (Single tenant).
- Leave the Redirect URI blank, then select Register.
- From the Overview page, copy and securely save the Application (client) ID and Directory (tenant) ID.
Tip: You don't need to configure a Redirect URI for this connection.
Configure API permissions and create a client secret
- In your app registration, go to API permissions.
- Select Add a permission, then Dynamics 365 Business Central under Microsoft APIs.
- Select Application permissions, then select API and check API.ReadWrite.All.
- Select Add permissions.
- Select Grant admin consent for [Your Organization] and confirm.
- Go to Certificates & secrets and select New client secret.
- Enter a description, select an expiration period, and select Add.
Reminder: Microsoft only displays the client secret value when it's created; it can't be retrieved later from the application registration.
Register the application in Dynamics 365 Business Central
Registering the application in Microsoft Entra ID and granting API permissions doesn't, by itself, give the application access to Business Central. You'll also need to register it in Business Central and assign the required permission sets.
- Sign in to Dynamics 365 Business Central.
- Search for and open Microsoft Entra Applications. In some older versions, this may appear as Azure Active Directory Applications.
- Select New.
- Enter the Application (Client) ID from the previous step in the Client ID field.
- Enter "Forwardly" in the Description field.
- Change State to Enabled.
- In the User Permission Sets section, assign the permission sets required for the Forwardly integration.
Reminder: Microsoft Entra application identities can't simply be assigned the SUPER permission set for this type of access. The application needs the specific Business Central permission sets required by the integration.
Connect your business on Forwardly to Microsoft Dynamics 365
Now that you've prepared your credentials in Microsoft Entra ID and Business Central, it's time to finish connecting your business on Forwardly.
- Sign in to Forwardly.
- Go to Settings, then Integrations.
- Find Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and select Connect.
- Enter the Directory (Tenant) ID, Application (Client) ID, and Client Secret.
- Select Continue.
- Select the Business Central environment you want to connect, such as Production or Sandbox.
- Select the Business Central company you want to connect to this Forwardly workspace.
- Select Connect.
Once you complete these steps, Business Central and Forwardly should be fully synced. The initial synchronization may take some time, depending on the amount of data in your Business Central account.
Tip: You don't need to manually enter a Company ID; Forwardly retrieves the available companies through the Business Central APIs.
How do I connect to another Business Central company?
Each Forwardly connection is associated with one Business Central company. To connect additional companies from the same environment, you don't need to register a new Microsoft Entra application.
- Go to Forwardly, then Settings, then Integrations.
- Open Dynamics 365 Business Central and select Connect another company.
- Select the company you want to connect with from the list Forwardly retrieves.
- Select Connect.
Troubleshooting your Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central connection
If your connection fails, re-verify the following details:
- Was the Application (Client) ID, Directory (Tenant) ID, and Client Secret copied correctly, with no extra spaces?
- Is the Forwardly application still Enabled under Microsoft Entra Applications in Business Central?
- Has the application been assigned the Business Central permission sets required for the integration?
- Is API.ReadWrite.All still configured as an Application permission in Microsoft Entra ID, and has admin consent been granted? Find it under API permissions in your app registration.
If the connection fails after changing the client secret, create a new client secret in Microsoft Entra ID, copy the new value, and update the credentials in Forwardly.
If you've re-checked all details and the connection is still failing, please submit a ticket to speak with our team.
